Thomas Morris: The ultimate Orange Day supporters

Thomas Morris: The ultimate Orange Day supporters

Staff at Thomas Morris didn’t just go orange; they went above and beyond for Magpas Air Ambulance’s annual Orange Day! The Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire based estate agents pledged to raise £5,000 this May for our lifesaving service – and they didn’t disappoint!

Each branch of the estate agents came up with their own fundraising idea and set out to raise as much money as they could for Magpas. Some wore orange for the day, donning some interesting bright orange suits, and donated money; others hosted bake sales and raffles for the local community. Two very notable fundraising exploits consisted of a car push and a netball tournament and the company even turned their website orange for the whole month of May!

The netball tournament was a huge success! 18 teams took part on the day; everyone got together alongside their spectators and supporters, and competed in the charity tournament. The sunshine was out; there was a BBQ, bouncy castle, cake sale and raffle throughout the day. Teams of all abilities took part and had a lot of fun, and in the end it was The Cherries who took home the trophy.

The car push was an event that we’ve never seen before. Staff from Thomas Morris pushed one of the Magpas Air Ambulance rapid response vehicles for 24 miles in just 7 hours (to represent our 24/7 lifesaving service)! They got off to a slow start; however they soon found their stride and managed to complete the challenge in 7 hours on the dot! The people taking part were sponsored by friends, family and local companies.

The guys and girls at Thomas Morris have outdone themselves this year, they have smashed their original target and raised well over £5,000 for Magpas Air Ambulance! We are so grateful to have such committed and enthusiastic supporters!

He’s afraid of heights, he’s an air ambulance Dr & he’s doing a skydive!

He’s afraid of heights, he’s an air ambulance Dr & he’s doing a skydive!

You could sponsor our very own Magpas Doctor Saad Jawaid, who has decided to jump out of a plane at 13,000ft to raise vital funds for Magpas Air Ambulance!

Saad has been a doctor for more than a decade, and has worked in the emergency department for over 7 years. He worked in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan before moving to the UK with his family in 2012 to develop his career further. Doctor Saad Jawaid currently splits his time between working with Magpas Air Ambulance, forming one of the crucial members of our enhanced medical team, and at Royal Leicester Infirmary. Saad brings his specialist skills by land and by air to patients in life threatening emergencies across the East of England and beyond.

When talking about Magpas Air Ambulance and what he thinks of the charity Doctor Saad Jawaid says ‘It took no time at all for me to become thoroughly inspired by Magpas Air Ambulance. Over the last few months, I’ve attended numerous emergency call outs alongside a critical care paramedic, where we have needed to provide lifesaving treatments on the road side. These patients had little or no chance of reaching the hospital alive, but Magpas doesn't believe that quality care is limited to the boundaries of the hospital, as a result we take A&E level care to the patient.’

The fact that Magpas Air Ambulance relies on generous public donations to continue to provide essential lifesaving care is why Saad decided to take part in the annual Magpas Air Ambulance skydive. He explains ‘the crucial difference we can make has inspired me to fundraise and skydive for Magpas Air Ambulance - despite my fear of heights. It’s just beautiful to know that I’ll be able to pitch in a little for a charity that has been doing outstanding work, and setting the highest standards, for almost half a century.’

You can sponsor Dr Saad Jawaid and help him to provide critically ill patients with his specialist skills and the utmost level of care wherever they may be.

• £14 could pay for Saad to provide a seriously ill patient, who needs to be sedated at the scene, with a shot of Ketamine.
• £20 could pay for a thermal blanket, and as Saad said, ‘Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine is not all about blood and knives. A recent experience of attending a young patient involved in a car crash taught me that a fast heart rate and cold hands can be treated by a blanket, a warm ambulance cabin and few comforting words.’
• You could even sponsor him £55, which would finance the rapid response vehicle our doctors and paramedics use, when it is quicker to get to a patient by land, for an entire day.

Magpas is going all the way to Chicago!

Magpas is going all the way to Chicago!

We have amazing volunteers who set themselves fundraising challenges to raise money for Magpas and we think this is possibly one of the furthest away marathons run for us! Alex has been offered a place in the Chicago Marathon in October.

Alex wanted to combine his determination to beat his London Marathon time and his desire to visit America in one go and came up with the brilliant plan. He heard all about Magpas through his work colleagues and looked in to our work on this website. He was very inspired by what he saw and chose Magpas to be the charity to run for. We are very lucky to have your support Alex and thank you very much. To support Alex please visit his Virgin Money page www.virginmoneygiving.com/AlexAshley. Good  luck from us all Alex!

Once again Peter puts the miles in for Magpas

Peter German is taking on the challenge of the Cambridge Half Marathon on Sunday 8th March 2015 to raise money for Magpas Helimedix, helping us continue to bring A&E care to patients in life threatening emergencies.

Four years ago he ran the London Marathon to raise funds for the charity. Still dedicated to our cause, Peter has generously chosen to support us yet again, by taking to the tarmac.

Peter says, “Having run the London Marathon previously for national charities, I decided to run in 2011 for Magpas. The reason being that Magpas provides a wonderful service and is local so I can actually see my fundraising money at work. I am running the Cambridge Half Marathon on Sunday 8th March and once again in honour of Magpas, so if anyone feels able in these difficult times to support this wonderful charity, they can be assured that the money will be put to good use in Cambridgeshire and beyond.”

You can sponsor Peter and help fundraise for Magpas’s lifesaving service by logging onto his JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/Peter-German2/

Russell & Sam are going insane!

Russell Neve and Sam Knightley also known as Team Crazy are running the 5k go insane in Peterborough in memory of a very special friend they both lost on the 28th December very suddenly.

Russell says: 'We are members of a motorcycle club called the HBF and Fran was a very much loved and cared for member of the club. We do fundraising events, but very close to Fran's heart was Magpas so Sam lovingly entered herself into the challenge and I followed suit shortly after for the simple fact of, we are both daft, but felt we had to do something to raise funds for a great charity and dedicate it to Fran's memory'.

We would like to wish them both the very best for the training and the event itself and say thank you for this amazing challenge.

If you would like to support the guys, then please visit their Just Giving Page: https://www.justgiving.com/Team-crazy/?utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=fundraisingpage&utm_content=Team-crazy&utm_campaign=pfp-share-mobile

13 year old Peterborough boy completes lifesaving chocolate fast!

13 year old Peterborough boy completes lifesaving chocolate fast!

Photo caption: Daniel Milson eating his first chocolate for 368 days - all in the name of Magpas lifesavers!

Daniel Milson, from near Yaxley, has just completed the kind of challenge that would leave your average person (be they adult or teenager), quaking in their shoes at the sheer prospect...especially during the recent festive season!

On the morning of 1st January last year, 13 year old Dan suddenly announced to his family that he was going to give up chocolate for a whole 365 days and ever since, he has stuck to his pact without so much of a sniff of a Mars Bar! Not even his Home Economics class, with all his form mates cooking a yule chocolate log, could temp him to the dark side. Instead, he was the only student to opt for making a Swiss Roll. As if that isn't impressive enough, Dan waited an extra three whole days, until the first weekend of the new year, to be awarded his first taste of cocoa by the lifesaving team he's been raising funds for over the past 12 months.

Dan's mum Mel explains, "We're so impressed by his will power and strong mindedness, not once has he dissappeared for a sneaky chocolate bar". Mel goes on to say, "I've got so used to checking the ingredients of anything I'm cooking, for any sign of chocolate; Daniel's been really strict about everything and anything he been eating".

It was Hilary, Dan's aunt, who suggested he choose a locally based charity to support during his sponsored chocolate fast. She told Dan all about the organisation she and her work colleagues support - and very soon, his mind was made up. Peterborough, Cambridge and Northampton based recruitment specialists THE ONE GROUP have been supporting Magpas Helimedix for over seven years now. Magpas brings A&E care by land or by air, to patients with life threatening injuries, in the East of England and beyond.

Ever since making his decision as to who to raise funds for, Dan has been 100% committed to the cause. He says, "Knowing what this charity does is very inspiring, with people giving up their time to save lives, whether it's day or night".

Mum Mel points out, "None of us know when we might need Magpas Helimedix, it's the perfect choice of charity. Even Daniel's younger brother James (who's 10) is on board and has donated his pocket money too".

To honour Daniel's fasting accomplishment and £500 fundraising target; he and his family visited the Magpas Helimedix Operations Base. The Magpas Helimedix team on shift presented Daniel with his favourite type of chocolate, in front of the Magpas Helimedix Air Ambulance and Rapid Response BMWs, to thank him for supporting the crucial service Magpas provides. Daniel has at last broken his 12 month and 3 day pact to finally take his first, well-earned bite of CHOCOLATE!

Magpas Helimedix Paramedic Dan Read said, "We rely wholly on charitable funding to be able to do what we do at Magpas. What Dan has done is hugely impressive, we're really grateful to him for supporting us, so that we can continue to help patients in their moment of need".
