Regulation

Magpas Air Ambulance save lives and reduce suffering in the most challenging of circumstances. Achieving compliance with the Care Quality Commission's standards for quality and safety isn't just bureaucracy – it's about being able to ensure that patients and our NHS partners can be confident that the treatment we provide is delivered by properly trained and supervised staff, is as safe as it can be, is based on the most up to date medical practices and is constantly quality assured.

We take these responsibilities very seriously and we are proud to have been the first independent sector pre-hospital critical care and retrieval service in the UK to embrace this level of scrutiny and regulation.

Magpas first became registered as an independent medical agency with the then Health Care Commission in January 2007 and has successfully remained registered since. Magpas is registered for two medical services, firstly as an Ambulance Service, secondly as a Mobile Doctor Service. Magpas' Care Quality Commission registration covers all of our activities.

Mr Daryl Brown is the Care Quality Commission registered manager for Magpas. Governance

Clinical governance relates to quality, accountability, responsibility, safety and excellence - All of which are fundamental to Magpas' organisational culture and philosophy.

Central to good clinical governance is strong clinical leadership and robust clinical processes and standard operating procedures. The other components can be grouped into:

  • Staffing (selection, training and continuous professional development, clinical supervision and advice)
  • Systems (audit, risk management and dealing with serious untoward incidents and clinical indemnity arrangements).

Magpas continues to endeavour to:

  • Improve the delivery of its services and the clinical outcomes for patients;
  • listen to the people it serves;
  • Provide opportunity for continuous personal and professional development;
  • Value education, training and research;
  • Analyse and reflect on all of its operational and clinical activity and be open about the strengths and weaknesses of its services;
  • Nurture a culture where blame is the exception rather than the rule, learning from errors is the norm and new approaches are freely shared and willingly received.

Together these elements are aimed at securing safe services and high clinical outcomes.
