Sawtry based A&E doctor (and former Norfolk pub landlord) Dr Chris Targett faced the cold and icy temperatures earlier, when he travelled over to the offices of Magpas – The Emergency Medical Charity. He wanted to say goodbye, before embarking on the first leg of his solo, motorbike adventure around South America.
Poor Chris got a shock on the way to St Ives, after a car nudged into the back of his bike on the A14. Fortunately Chris wasn’t injured and his bike wasn’t badly damaged, but he said the experience highlighted just how crucial the emergency care is that Magpas provides. He went on to say, “I feel proud to be supporting a charity that helps people on the roads in their hour of absolute need. There are also deep family connections with Magpas, after my girlfriend Sam was saved by the volunteer medics, this means a lot to me”.
When asked how he felt about the prospect of circumnavigating South America and travelling 20,500 miles alone, he answered, “It’s been so far off, it hasn’t felt real. But now the New Year is here, the nervous excitement has well and truly set in!”
Chris, also known as Tigger because of his energetic personality, was accompanied by his girlfriend Sam this morning. Sam said she was looking forward to Tigger setting off, but only for time to pass quickly and for him to be back home again as soon as possible. She said, “There’s been so much preparation for Chris’s trip, I can’t believe he’s actually leaving! I’m worried about him going, but I’m happy for him too”.
Tigger’s bike will be shipped to South America later today and Chris will be following in the next fortnight.
