Magpas Helimedix team (Dr Mark Folman, Volunteer Paramedic Jo Lambert and Observer Lucy Smith) arrived at a residential address near their base at RAF Wyton, to treat a female patient in her 30’s who was suffering a cardiac arrest. The Magpas team arrived on scene at 7:45am.

Vital early CPR was provided by a Volunteer Community First Responder, who arrived on the scene within 2 minutes of the 999 emergency call coming in. When the Magpas team arrived, they provided the woman (who was also a new mum), with essential A&E care at the scene.

The Magpas Helimedix then accompanied the woman in a land ambulance to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, her condition was described as serious. They were met at Addenbrooke’s by senior Magpas Doctor, A&E consultant Dr Rod Mackenzie where the patient continues to receive specialist care.

An EEAST Ambulance Crew was also on the scene.

At 7:19pm last night (15th), Magpas Helimedix (Dr Fiona Bowles and Volunteer Paramedic Ash Richardson) arrived in Benwick near Ramsey, after a car came off the road and ended up in a ditch.

A woman in her 20’s was trapped in the car and suffered severe back pain, a suspected serious spinal injury and a numbness in her leg. When the Magpas team arrived, the woman was shivering with cold in the car, which was stuck at a 35 degree angle in the ditch. The fire service on scene then worked to remove the car doors and roof, whilst the Magpas Doctor and Paramedic administered pain killers and wrapped the woman in blankets.

The Magpas team then sedated the patient, so that she could be removed from the car as safely and painlessly as possible – and to prevent any further damage to her spine. She was then escorted by Magpas to Peterborough City Hospital in a land ambulance, on arrival her condition was described as serious but stable.

Dr Fiona Bowles said, “With the car at an angle in a ditch, getting our patient out safely was difficult, but the fire crew and the EEAST Ambulance crew on the scene worked brilliantly as a team. The danger of an incident like this happening at night, is the patient becomes colder and colder. What we were able to do was make her sleepy and comfortable. This hugely speeds up getting her to safety”.

At 5:30pm yesterday evening (11th February), our Magpas Helimedix team (Dr Fiona Bowles and Volunteer Paramedic Ryan Warwick) flew in the Magpas and Police Helicopter and arrived at a residential address in Rushden, to treat a young girl who was semi-conscious. The girl had been sledging earlier; she had fallen after swerving to avoid a dog and suffered a serious head injury.

When our Magpas team got to the house, the girl was semi-conscious, after having suffered a seizure and fit. The Magpas Helimedix anaesthetised her in her living room (within 15 minutes of landing the helicopter), in order to protect her brain.

She was then carefully carried by the team (in sub-zero temperatures) to the Magpas and Police Helicopter (with the help of a BASICS doctor). The patient was subsequently airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, our Magpas Helimedix providing her with critical care all the way. On arrival, her condition was described as serious but stable. Today she is awake and her family are with her.

Magpas Dr Fiona Bowles said, “She has made an excellent recovery. I must highlight that without Magpas Helimedix, this little girl would not have been able to get to the right hospital in the right time. Magpas Helimedix is the only dedicated night time air ambulance with a highly trained doctor and paramedic on board in the whole of the UK”.

Dr Bowles went on to say, “Keeping the patient warm, whilst wading through snow, was the biggest challenge. I am so proud of the fact that despite temperatures in the region hitting minus 17 yesterday, her temperature was a normal 36 degrees C when she got to the hospital”.

She added, “The EEAST Ambulance Crew and BASICS doctor who were also on the scene were brilliant ”.
