Commercial Training
After running successful training courses since 2001, Magpas has opened up specific areas of their training to other pre-hospital providers and immediate care practitioners.
Magpas currently run two corporate, commercial training courses – Pre-Hospital Emergency Anaesthesia and Patient Safety at the Sharp End.
Pre-hospital Emergency Anaesthesia
Pre-hospital Emergency Anaesthesia (PHEA) is an essential component of safe pre-hospital critical care and retrieval. With the development of national guidelines for pre-hospital anaesthesia and a new sub-speciality competence framework, it is essential that practitioners undertake formal training in this high risk intervention.
This two and a half day residential course teaches a safe and effective system for pre-hospital emergency anaesthesia (PHEA) based on the Magpas experience over the last 38 years.
The course focuses on the indications for PHEA, the techniques and processes for administering PHEA and the common complications. High fidelity, full immersion human simulation is used throughout the course and the participant numbers are limited to 12 to ensure optimal faculty-instructor ratios.
The faculty members are experienced consultants, general practitioners and paramedics who are directly involved in the delivery of pre-hospital emergency medicine. Led by Dr Rod Mackenzie, Consultant and Senior Lecturer in Emergency Medicine at the University of Leicester and Dr Simon Lewis, Clinical Director Magpas Helimedix, the faculty are all experienced in the delivery of simulator based training.
Patient Safety at the Sharp End
This one day seminar is aimed at pre-hospital providers who want to make this environment safer for patients, carers and rescuers. This seminar brings to life the key principles of clinical governance, human factors and team resource management. Richly illustrated with real life clinical cases and proven methods to avoid, trap and migrate the consequences of common error, attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how to optimise their own operational practice. The seminar is also relevant to Emergency Department and hospital based staff involved in provision of pre-hospital care.
The seminar is led by Dr Rod Mackenzie, Consultant in Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine. Rod has practised pre-hospital emergency medicine and managed the delivery of pre-hospital services in some of the most challenging environments in the world, including remote areas, major multiple casualty incidents and combat zones. His experience in the UK includes day and night HEMS operations, land based emergency medical team and hospital flying squad responses and traditional immediate care scheme practice. His research focuses on injury prevention and control.
