Magpas the multi award winning medical charity
Magpas is proud to be a multi award winning charity. The charity has received a large number of high accolades relating to its innovation and the thousands of individuals who have benefitted from the lifesaving services the charity provides.
Awards include:
Investing in Volunteers is the UK quality standard for all organisations which involve volunteers in their work. The Standard enables organisations to comprehensively review their volunteer management, and also publicly demonstrates their commitment to volunteering.
Magpas was first accredited with the Investing in Volunteer’s standard in 2008. The charity is honoured to be recognised for the great investment we have made in our volunteers over the past 40 years. Link to Investing in Volunteers website
The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to volunteer groups across the UK for outstanding work done in their local communities.
Winners of the award receive a certificate signed by Her Majesty The Queen and a domed glass crystal. Magpas was the proud recipient of Queens Award for voluntary service in 2005, in recognition of the outstanding voluntary contribution made by over 300 volunteers from our Helimedix and Community First Responder Schemes.
The Royal Humane Society is a charity that grants awards for acts of bravery in the saving of human life and, also, for the restoration of life by resuscitation. The Society was founded in London in 1774 by two eminent medical men, William Hawes and Thomas Cogan after it became apparent that people were putting their own lives in danger rescuing others and awards were given in recognition of these acts of outstanding bravery.

Top Award for Magpas Research

At the Difficult Airway Society Meeting held in November at Nottingham, Magpas Helimedix Doctor Jon Birks and his NHS colleague Andy Hughes were awarded first prize for a poster they presented displaying research undertaken by Magpas – The Emergency Medical Charity.
The research project focused on a safety test used by Magpas Helimedix, to help them strategically plan before conducting emergency anaesthesia outside the hospital. The research confirmed this was a useful test and the Helimedix teams will continue to use it. The judges at the meeting, experts in their field, were so impressed by this poster they awarded it the top prize in the Survey/Audit/Research Category.
Project lead Jon Birks said, “We are delighted to have been awarded this proze in recognition of our work. There were lots of great posters at the confrerence and to think that a charity has beaten some University Hospital departments to the top prize is amazing. This goes to show that Magpas provides not only high quality clinical care to patients, but it also is leading the way in other areas too. I would like to thank Magpas doctors Simon Lewis and Rod Mackenzie, the other authors, for their help in this project too”.
This is not the end for this project. The final full article is soon to be submitted to medical journals, so others around the world can read the research and learn from it too. It is hoped this may help save lives in the future.
