Activations and Costs

Magpas Helimedix is regularly the most utilise and dispatched Air Ambulance in the East of England. Magpas has attended over 50,000 patients since we were founded in 1971.

It currently costs £750,000 per year to provide this lifesaving service, all funded through public donations. Magpas Helimedix consist of over 50 medical professionals, who provide over £3million worth of front line emergency medical cover to the East of England, through a combination of volunteer, Military and NHS funded doctors and paramedics.

Activations by area

Magpas Helimedix is the original Air Ambulance for Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Peterborough and Ely. We do however continue to provide our lifesaving doctors and paramedics to all counties in the East of England, when they are required and called upon by the East of England Ambulance Service.

Mobilised to over 405 incidents since January 2011.

The East of England has a population of over 5.8 million and Magpas is on hand for anyone who is seriously injured or in need of our expert medical care.

Mobilisation by Transport type

The Strategic Health Authority and key partners across the region recognise the importance of the Magpas Helimedix service which operates from RAF Wyton in Huntingdonshire. It is of course not by chance that Magpas is positioned at this central location. From our base in Huntingdonshire we are able to respond rapidly to any medical emergency in the region.

  • By road we can respond in our emergency response vehicle to anywhere in Cambridgeshire within 30minutes!
  • By helicopter we can get to virtually anywhere in the East of England within 30minutes! When patients are critically injured and trapped these quick response times can make all the difference.

Late Shift Mobilisation

Magpas Helimedix continue to be the only Care Quality Commission Registered provider of Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine to fly at night with doctors in the UK something we are immensely proud of.

During the hours of darkness Magpas becomes unique. Our partnership with Cambridgeshire Constabulary: Police Helicopter means that we can continue to provide our lifesaving Helimedix teams to medical emergencies across the region. Due to the Police Civil Aviation Authority license, Magpas Helimedix teams can be delivered directly to the scene of road traffic collisions, bringing A&E level care to the side of the road. Magpas doctor and paramedic teams are the only third sector provider to offer this service in the whole of the UK.

Magpas produces a range of comprehensive governance reports to the highest possible standard. We provide these reports to all of our partners which give a breakdown of our monthly activity why not take a look at our most recent: July 2010 August 2010 September 2010.

Incredibly Magpas continue to provide all of the above on a charitable basis; this is why we need your help.

Magpas is an incredibly lean organisation; in fact it only costs around £750,000 per year to provide all of this lifesaving treatment. This is where you can help! If you can please make a donation, every pound that you do donate will enable us to keep your Helimedix teams flying and driving to people in real need of our help.  Donate now.
